Yellow Shotgun Bird House
Your Creation: “Little Yellow NOLA Shotgun Bird House”
Shotgun Houses are commonly found in New Orleans and other major historical southern cities. They were long narrow houses built in late 1800’s and early 1900’s. The rooms were laid out in a straight line to help with air circulation. The developers squeezed as many of these homes onto a small plot of land, making them more affordable to low-income residents. These simple homes were praised for their architectural characteristics such as gingerbread trim and bright colors. In the historical neighborhoods in New Orleans, you will see many of these cute, prized houses still standing.
This decoration was custom made using old discarded wood found in New Orleans. The 4 sides were crafted from fence boards found in the mid-city area and the wood on the floor was made from an old window framing board pulled from a dumpster near historic Esplanade Ave in New Orleans. The roof was made from the siding which came off a yellow shotgun house on Moss St (Bayou St. John).
