This bowl was handcrafted from a slab of a live oak tree that fell in 2021 during hurricane Ida.  This tree was only about 35 years old; however, oak trees can live many 100’s of years.  Historically, they were used in construction for beams and posts because the strong and dense wood. They can weigh 50 pounds per cubic foot.  In fact, the U.S.S. Constitution reportedly received its nickname, "Old Ironsides," during the War of 1812 because of its live oak hull.

Live oaks thrive in the southern coastal regions and are planted by cities as a symbol of strength and durability.  New Orleans’ City Park has the world’s largest collection of mature live oaks that have survived many storms and floods. These are known for their size, Spanish moss and resurrection fern.

This piece was dried, carved and polyurethaned to accent the beauty of the wood grain & natural colors.  It was crafted in 2024, with you in mind from start to finish.
