large Red Oak Bowl

This wooden bowl was power carved from a 5-inch slab of wood cut from the trunk of a Red Oak tree that fell during hurricane Ida in 2021.  This tree was at least 40 years old but can easily live 100 years or more.

The Red Oak tree is also known as the "Spanish Oak" because it is native to the areas of early Spanish colonies and very abundant in the southeastern United States.  The coarse-grained hardwood is extremely durable and is used in manufacturing of floors, furniture and counter tops.

As you can see, this tree was under stress.  The holes were created by bugs that infected the tree and unique lines & color patterns, called Spalting, indicate that the tree was in early stages for decay.

This piece has been dried, carved and polyurethaned to accent the beauty of the natural colors.  It was crafted in 2024, with you in mind from start to finish.
