Your Creation: “Spalted Oak Bowl”

This wooden bowl was power-carved from a 6 inch slab of wood cut from the trunk of a live oak tree. This tree was only about 30 years old, but was infected with bugs that were slowly killing it. Oak trees can live many 100’s of years.  Historically, they were used in construction for beams and posts because the strong and dense wood. They can weigh 50 pounds per cubic foot.  In fact, the U.S.S. Constitution reportedly received its nickname, "Old Ironsides," during the War of 1812 because of its live oak hull.

Live oaks thrive in the southern coastal regions and are planted by cities as a symbol of strength and durability.  New Orleans’ City Park has the world’s largest collection of mature live oaks that have survived many storms and floods. These are known for their size, Spanish moss and resurrection fern.

This piece has been dried, carved and polyurethaned to accent the beauty of the natural colors. The wood was accumulated and crafted in 2021.
