Oak Leaf Bowl
Your Creation: “Oak Leaf Bowl”
This basket was power-carved from a large limb cut from a live oak tree that fell during 2021 hurricane Ida. This tree was only about 35 years old; however, oak trees can live many 100’s of years. Historically, they were used in construction for beams and posts because the strong and dense wood. They can weigh 50 pounds per cubic foot. In fact, the U.S.S. Constitution reportedly received its nickname, "Old Ironsides," during the War of 1812 because of its live oak hull.
Live oaks thrive in the southern coastal regions and are planted by cities as a symbol of strength and durability. New Orleans’ City Park has the world’s largest collection of mature live oaks that have survived many storms and floods. These are known for their size, Spanish moss and resurrection fern.
This piece, has been dried, carved and polyurethaned to accent the beauty of the natural colors. It was crafted in 2022.
